I live in Seattle, a city with a rich Japanese heritage. Cherry trees are planted in all parts of the city. There are also many Japanese businesses, including a very special one, Kyoto Antiques, that imports antique items from Japan. In their warehouse filled with kimono, ceramics, tansu chests, artwork and ephemera, I found several very old rice paper books written in kanji, the traditional Japanese script. These books became the source of some of the paper I used to make the flowers in this basket. Cherry blossoms, mums, and dahlias are several of the native Japanese flora depicted here. And be sure to look for a pair of beetles that are nestled among the blooms! Made in the same way as my other wire and paper baskets with a woven wire base, this basket conceals the structural wire support for the sides so that your eyes focus on the design and colors of the flowers. The basket is sealed for protection and use. Due to the handmade nature of my work, no two baskets are ever quite alike.
