My wall sculptures start with a background made from shards of recycled stoneware slabs.  All of the pieces used in this assemblage have been fired in a sawdust kiln.  Sawdust firing is one the oldest firing techniques.  My work is a modern take on this ancient technique still practiced in many parts of the world. The clay is treated with various surface treatments - terra sigillata, oxides, stains - and then put into the kiln.  The fire in the kiln is smothered and the heat and smoke leave lovely black, copper and gold markings that cling to the clay. Hand fashioned botanical clay shapes are also added to the kiln.  I take the best of what has come out of the firing and assemble them into a design.  Always included are actual dried elements - my nod to the resilience of real plants. All the elements are secured and framed, ready for hanging.  Framed size 15x14x4.
