Color Theory III is an art quilt that I have stitched to canvas and stretched over a wood frame. The palette is bold, and the intense matchstick quilting give it a lux, eye-catching texture.
To create this piece, I assembled the design by employing both patchwork and applique techniques on my home sewing machine. I layered the patchwork with batting and canvas, and quilted the layers together using free-motion quilting: a technique that allows me to sketch on top of the fabric, much like a pen on paper. I then finished the edges of the textile with an embroidery stitch, stretched the work over a custom-built wooden frame, and finished the edges with a mixture of acrylic paint and pumice, to lend a concrete-like effect.
Materials: cotton fabric, batting, thread, acrylic, pumice, wooden frame
