About The Artist

Mary Van Abel-Kronberg • Marquette , MI

SquareRootsDesign pillows are made with an emphasis on the character of materials, a respect for the past and quality craftsmanship. They are designed to bring an artful statement and easy heirloom luxury to the joyful home. I piece and patchwork together original compositions using collections of vintage, found, and new materials using bold radiating colors, contrasting textures, patterns and elements of surprise. I am also a professional Exhibits Designer, Seamstress and Fine Art Painter.

Q&A with the Artist

Tell us how your work is made.

Technically speaking I construct each patchwork pillow cover with upholstery weight vintage, new, found fabrics from my materials collections. I use bonded nylon upholstery weight thread on patchwork construction, invisible zippers and top quality hypoallergenic faux down inserts. Materials include cotton velvet, jacquard, silk, damasks, printed and woven cottons. Playful compositions are created with bold vibrant color, contrasting textures, surprising patterns. Often a theme will emerge in the composition. One of my most enduring compositional themes is the garden.

What makes you passionate about the medium you work with?

As a home goods designer, I believe in elevating our homes with the original, artful and creative. Textiles can bring a pop of color, comfort, joy and luxury into a space instantly. I have worked with fabric for over 30 years and enjoy creating these pieces very much. SquareRootsDesign is a wonderful counterpoint to my other professional art and design roles as a museum exhibits designer and fine art painter.

What is something unique about you or your practice?

The unexpected patchwork compositions, contrasting patterns and textures create an original textile statement. I enjoy making them and then seeing them used in a home space that may otherwise be fairly neutral in color. In that environment the pillow designs are like little jewels that "sing"with a unique and vibrant pop of color. Likewise in a colorful home space they can add an element of coordinating color interest, luxury and joy. SquareRootsDesign textiles have been described as the "cherry on top" I like that!
