About The Artist

Regina Vorgang • Ventura, CA
Fiber & Textiles • CUSTOM COMMISSIONS

I create original handwoven wool rugs, table runners and tapestries that combine my strong sense of color and design with weaving to make bold, functional pieces. Many of my pieces are woven in a painterly fashion by creating shapes and changing color while I build the weaving. Others, like my Socially Speaking Rugs, are planned and mapped out before I begin weaving. My designs are very graphic and each piece is one-of-a-kind.

Q&A with the Artist

Tell us how your work is made.

I design and weave my pieces with wool fiber that I source from local suppliers who work sustainably and spin and dye their wool. I have designs I work up with different color palettes, choosing the colors I want to work with for each piece and then weave in a painterly fashion, changing shapes and colors as I weave. I keep sketch books with ideas for inspiration when starting a new series or design.

What makes you passionate about the medium you work with?

Wool fiber is so appealing, the feel of it, the way the light catches the fiber and how the dyed colors are so rich. The wool is very durable so the weavings I make will last a long time so they can be handed down. I like the sustainably of wool fiber and that it is totally biodegradable. I like supporting the local farms and fiber suppliers who make the fiber materials I use in my pieces.

What is something unique about you or your practice?

I studied art and became a graphic designer before moving on to weaving after 20 years as a designer. Whether it’s in the design I weave or the color choices, I use my graphic design sense and background in all my work.
