About The Artist

Katie MacDonald • Plymouth, MI

My artistic practice is focused on exploring the language of objects and the narrative of material. In the studio, I delight in exploring different and sometimes contradicting media, and in tinkering to feel my way through the narrow paths between form and function. I have found lamp forms to be an apt vehicle for this creative inquiry.

Q&A with the Artist

Tell us how your work is made.

My work is hand made, but often depends on ready-made components such as lamp fittings and light bulbs. I enjoy the problem-solving that is involved when incorporating a fixed, standardized component into the design of a piece.

What makes you passionate about the medium you work with?

I am often moved when observing the ways that different materials respond to my hands. Material play, experimentation, and investigation is at the core of my studio activity.

What is something unique about you or your practice?

When I find myself in need of inspiration, I head to the hardware store. I find so much beauty in utility.
