Q&A with the Artist

Tell us how your work is made.

I use a combination of a propane forge, oxy-acetylene torch, MIG welder, hammers, tongs, angle grinders, and other metalworking tools to heat and form metal into various shapes. I heat metal using the forge or torch and then use hammers and other tools to manipulate and shape the metal.

What makes you passionate about the medium you work with?

Working with metal and fire is as close to magic as you can come. I apply heat to an unbendable piece of metal and suddenly it turns into laffy taffy, able to be bent, pulled, and twisted in any direction. And then suddenly it freezes in that position and becomes unyielding again. Watching the effect heat, spark, and flame have as an agent for change is one of my favorite things about working with metal. It is a physical practice that requires the whole body's involvement and challenges what I think myself capable of doing.

What is something unique about you or your practice?

As a disabled artist, I have developed adaptive techniques to use to create my work. These alternative approaches to blacksmithing and welding are what make my work unique.
