This embroidery has been hand-stitched on a scrap of deep blue kimono silk. As I was stitching this, I was thinking about the teaming life that exists in our oceans, from the smallest blue-green algae to huge, living choral reefs.
I build my embroideries in an improvisational way, starting with a vague idea, a palette, and a few stitches which lead me to more and more ideas and additions. This embroidery uses a number of different stitches such as chain stitch, French knots, seed stitches, cretan stitch, and bouillon knots. I've also embellished it with beads.
This piece is finished in a painted hoop with a felt backing and my initials.
Dimensions: 5.25 inches in diameter and about a half inch deep.
