My work is heavily influenced by the natural world. On my walks I often find beautiful pieces of nature and bring them home for inspiration or possible use in a future project. This botanical patterned bird was created using collected, delicate, but surprisingly strong, leaf skeletons. I used a brayer and acrylic paint to imprint the pattern of the leaf skeleton onto pieces of white maple wood veneer. Next, I created a pattern of individual feathers using the shape of a leaf as inspiration. Each piece was dried, cut, steamed, glued and clamped to dry. Next, the bird is slowly assembled. Each bird receives a coat of satin finish spar-urethane for covered outdoor use. I create the feet out of paper covered wire. Each foot is prehensile and can hold small objects. Each bird is also fashioned with a loop made of the same paper wire for suspending as if in flight.
Each bird is made to order. Since they are individually handcrafted, once this bird sells, the next bird ordered will look similar to the bird in the picture but will not be exactly the same. Her approximate weight is 2oz and her size is 7.5. inches tip of beak to tip of tail with a wingspan of 8.5 inches.
