Thread bird portraits are created by a process of using a sewing machine to free flow draw on a fiber surface. These are based on my ink drawings of endangered and popular birds that show personality and emotions. Portraits are created with black thread on organic raw canvas. They are stretched and attached to a wooden disc with double stick tape, then another wooden disc is wood glued onto the back to secure the canvas and give it a durable backing. A hanging ring, signature and date and name of bird are all on the back. Then the entire piece is framed in a wooden embroidery hoop that may be vintage or new. All work is created one at a time, by the artist in a smoke-free, animal-free historical Mill studio space.
