One of the best things about living on a farm is the thrill of the hunt, known to less imaginative souls as clearing brush. Sycamore trees contribute to that thrill almost daily by dropping the most wonderful crooked, bent and gnarled sticks. I was overjoyed when I discovered this almost square branch and knew it would be the highlight of an original design.
I used three graduated widths of cane in a diamond twill pattern with a Japanese diamond border of black cane. I hand-split and added bamboo embellishments to each corner and a rim with a bumper guard of round reed lashed with a split “V” stitch. The Sycamore element is attached with rice stitches while the exterior square base is black lacquer. Finished with matte shellac. I hope 'Little Sy' will hold your interest from every angle.
