This triple spiral is often referred to as a Triskele or Triskelion. Its earliest creation dates back to the Neolithic era (circa 10,000 BCE). I first experienced this symbol when visiting the Megalithic Chamber at Newgrange in Ireland. I was moved by the magic and mystery that seemed to emanate from the ancient motif. While it is often referred to as a Celtic design, it was carved at least 2500 years before the Celts reached Ireland.
Symbolists say the Triskele represents motion as all three arms are positioned to make it appear as if it is moving outwards from its center. This movement signifies energy transfer, in particular cycles, progress, revolution and transformation. The exact symbolic significance can differ depending on the era, culture, mythology and history at the time it was created. Some of the three based connotations include: life-death-rebirth, spirit-mind-body, past-present-future and power-intellect-love to name but a few. You can also assign your own trilogy and that is the beauty of this symbol.
The meaning of the triskele is diverse, varied and has many possibilities but they all kind of go back to the same place no matter what words are used to describe the triskele, it is believed to represent a tale of forward motion, reaching towards greater understanding.
