By using two graduated widths of cane, the finest round reed and combining several weaving techniques, I was able to produce a distinctive original on a black lacquered, square Red Oak base. That combination sets this unique piece apart as it highlights the diamond motif to perfection and each rounded corner features an optical illusion of a twisted rope.
I hand-dyed three gradient shades from navy to black to add depth. Culminating in a bamboo element from my farm, the growth ridges were the perfect spot for a final flourish of dyed round reed and love knots. The cane rim with a round reed bumper guard features an elaborate combination of a whip and blanket split stitch. Finished with light shellac, the exterior base is black lacquer.
