The intent of my work is to express my passion for Art and Engineering. The art of my sculptures is in the shapes I carve together with the beauty of the wood I select. I choose hardwoods that exhibit unusual colors and uncommon figure. My forms and finishes are chosen to showcase the grain flow of the wood. I enjoy adding texture to my forms by sandblasting the surface and enhancing the grain with color dyes and oil finishes.

Q&A with the Artist

Tell us how your work is made.

My sculptures are first roughed-out of a log with a gas chainsaw down to 100 lbs. Then I bring the form into my workshop for carving. I use over 20 different carving tools and templates to create my shapes along with a battery of different sanding tools to prepare the surfaces for finishing. The whole process takes 6-8 weeks.

What makes you passionate about the medium you work with?

The natural beauty of wood inspires me to create forms with movement to celebrate the motion of the trees in the wind. I enjoy using repurposed felled trees and giving them a second life in a new form.

What is something unique about you or your practice?

The shapes I carve along with the beautiful wood and finishes I select make my sculptures unique.
