There’s a sense of wonder that comes from putting on grandma’s jewelry, cooking and eating with mom’s old cutlery, or wearing dad’s letter jacket. I started Weather & Story to design and craft leather bags for the modern woman that would one day spark that same sense of wonder. I pair sustainably sourced, 100% full-grain leather with time-tested methods and classic design to craft timeless pieces that will withstand years of life, becoming treasured heirlooms.

Q&A with the Artist

Tell us how your work is made.

From sketching designs to packaging orders, every step is handled by my two hands in my Ohio workshop. I source full grain, vegetable tanned leather from a consortium or family run tanneries in Tuscany, all meeting highly vetted sustainability practices. From there, I hand cut each piece from the hide, construct the bags with a combination of hand and machine sewn techniques, and finish with solid brass hardware.

What makes you passionate about the medium you work with?

Working with leather feels like a gateway to the past and to the future all at once. This material has a long history as one of the earliest textiles used by humans, telling an incredible story. It is a rich, beautiful, organic material that is all at once consistent and unexpected. Every hide is unique, making every bag unique, ready to tell it's own special story over years and years to come. I love knowing that the bags I'm crafting are going on to live a second life and become heirlooms all their own.

What is something unique about you or your practice?

All of my leather hides are a byproduct of the meat industry and are vegetable tanned using the oldest, time tested methods, avoiding harsh chemicals and toxins. I am proud to be part of a circular economy, using materials that would other wise be wasted, allowing me to create products that are socially and environmentally friendly.
