Q&A with the Artist

Tell us how your work is made.

What makes you passionate about the medium you work with?

I love linen! I love its feel and look, its drape and functional nature. I love that it is so easily grown, making it possible to even grow and process in one's own backyard without toxins or huge amounts of water, or need for sophisticated machinery. Sustainable! And the process of weaving just speaks to my heart. The tactile experience, the organized process, the precision of miles of strings, the mechanical fascination, and the limitless opportunities all coalesce to bring me intense joy!

What is something unique about you or your practice?

Too often designers ignore the intended function of the piece making something that looks good but doesn't do its job. I feel compelled to make sure my designs function well first, then I add the eye candy. As a designer and maker, it is my obligation to make sure that my work performs for the task for which it was created. Linen lends itself extremely well to this mission. Although its non-elastic qualities are avoided by most weavers, I find it to be a workhorse of a fiber and a joy to weave.
