About The Artist

Tim Tate • Mount Rainier, MD
Glass • CUSTOM COMMISSIONS

Tim Tate is co-founder of the Washington Glass School, an institution dedicated to sculptural expression and located in Mt. Rainier, Maryland. I see the process of making and community building as two systems integrally intertwined. My story is that of a full-time studio artist who did not have the money to attempt an MFA. By gathering many other artists (we have over 5000 former students) and building a community we have achieved all that an MFA and so much more. That is my story.

Q&A with the Artist

Tell us how your work is made.

I use many techniques within my practice. While mostly kiln formed cast glass, I use and manipulate a variety of materials. I believe that is the future of craft.

What makes you passionate about the medium you work with?

I have worked with glass and other materials for decades. I believe that mixed media sculpture truly allows a wide expansion to the craft world. I also believe that craft communities rather that MFA programs will represent the great growth areas in craft. Its the best time in history to be a maker!

What is something unique about you or your practice?

If you believe that glass needs to be functional, you may be surprised at the diversity I bring to the material.
