About The Artist

Julie Wall • Fort Wayne, IN

I am drawn to the repetitious patterns found within many natural elements. Some pieces have more organic textures and configurations, while others are more heavily pronounced through painting, carving, or other artistic methods. These “blooms” are sculptural wall hangings with designs based from mushrooms and fungi seen in our environment. They are meant to showcase the beautiful scenery encompassed inside seemingly small, insignificant organisms.

Q&A with the Artist

Tell us how your work is made.

I draw all of my designs and patterns then scan them into the computer and laser cut them on my laser machine. After the pieces are made, I assemble and layer them. Some of the more plastic based pieces are heated with a heat gun and bent into shapes to add depth. Other materials, like the felt and leathers, are sewn together to create layers.

What makes you passionate about the medium you work with?

I love working with a variety of materials to showcase my work. I'm currently working with up-cycled materials such as wood, felt, leather, and acrylic pieces to create my blooms. I am passionate about using materials that may otherwise be discarded.

What is something unique about you or your practice?

I think the fact they are made from materials that were discarded by other businesses is unexpected. I always love using these items to create work that still looks fresh and vibrant.
