Q&A with the Artist

Tell us how your work is made.

In these design conversations of her studio work, spoken through her community sourced and reclaimed skateboards, Tara's material color and texture are more than surface aesthetic qualities; they are emotional connection points between these materials and the viewer. Each piece is designed in paper maquette forms first to establish scale and function. They are then traced on the skateboards, cut and hand-carved in her wood shop along side her metalsmithing bench where she then fabricates the findings engineered for each design. Her affinity for color and bold shapes reflects her years of pop culture influences and how it formed the way she sees self-expression through jewelry.

What makes you passionate about the medium you work with?

My reclaimed skateboards are a beloved continuing story between me and my skate community. The material represents the story of how this community reminded me of who I was after I lost myself in my previous corporate career. Through years of conversations and acceptance from a community that showed me how to belong again and believe in myself all while going back to school and discovering my now passion for contemporary jewelry and metalsmithing combined with wood-working.
