Clothing & Accessories

I make distinctive artisan garments that are designed and hand crafted solely by me. My work is primarily hand loomed knitted clothing using luxury fibers, such as alpaca, wool, linen and silk. My goal is to create comfortable, wearable garments that surprise and delight. I count myself among those whose haptic sense is strong, and who are destined to work with our hands and to manipulate materials.

Q&A with the Artist

Tell us how your work is made.

What makes you passionate about the medium you work with?

There is something magical about taking two sticks and some string and creating a garment using simple repetitive hand motions practiced for a lifetime. One theory of social science postulates that tools shape the way we think, thus the process of early basket making contributed to the evolutionary development of the human brain. Textile metaphors abound in our langrage: we interweave ideas in our thinking, we follow a thread in our conversations, we spin a yarn when telling a story.

What is something unique about you or your practice?

I find asymmetrical designs, motifs, colorwork and construction most compelling. Most of my garments are multi-colored. I use the placement of color to accentuate the garment design elements. Each garment is a mosaic of many individual knit stitches, and like a mosaic, every stitch and every color matters. I often include textural stitches, surface embellishments, painting and embroidery. Dimensional tucking techniques result in soft sculptures that envelop the body.
