About This Artist
My work is a portal into the ever-changing natural world of the Chesapeake Bay watershed. Using sgraffito to interpret different species of birds, fish, insects and plants on functional and sculptural porcelain forms I hope to bring to the user/viewer an awareness and appreciation of the variety of interdependent life that surrounds us.
Q&A With This Artist
A: My current work relies heavily on sgraffito: I build up coats of black terra sigillata (a very fine clay slip) onto the unfired porcelain surface of a thrown or hand-built vessel. I then carve away the slip to reveal the white porcelain. After a bisque firing, each piece is finished with a liner glaze and fired to 2200 °F.
A: I love the tactile quality of porcelain while creating a form and the smooth surface that gives me a chance to draw, scratch, carve on its surface.
A: I am fortunate to live in an area of abundant natural life that is an inspiration for my images.
