Meet the Artist
About This Artist
I am a bladesmith from New Jersey. I got my start in metal working taking classes at Peter's Valley School of Craft, eventually working my way up to the job as the Blacksmith Studio Assistant. In the winter of 2022 I completed a forging residency at the Center For Metal Arts in Johnstown Pennsylvania. My focus is currently on hand forged fantasy folding knives.
Q&A With This Artist
A: All of my work is handmade. The blades are hand forged in a coal forge, from 1084 high carbon tool steel. They are then shaped and polished with files and a belt grinder. The handle jackets are made from recycled copper piping and brass sheeting.
A: I love working in steel, and blades specifically, because I am able to find a balance between permanency and vulnerability. When your main tools are flame, hammer, and highspeed friction, you can destroy or change a piece in a split second. Yet when you let go and finish, the work can sit in state for hundreds of years until picked back up.
A: My work is inspired by fantasy and history. I like to think of each piece as a representation of a relic from another place and time.
A: For me wonder comes from going into creation with a plan, and coming out the other side with something different. Along the way I have to make concessions to the fire, the material and my own skill level. In the end the piece is neither what I set out to make nor something wholly improvised.
A: My artistic practice has been shaped by my father. From an early age he helped to foster an interest and ability in making things from scratch. Never has he discouraged the pursuit of a project no matter the size or scale.
