What is Kiln-Formed Glass? Kiln-glass is just that: Glass formed in a kiln. Kiln-glass (or kilnformed glass) objects are made with glasses tested as compatible for fusing when heated in a kiln. Tested compatible glasses were developed and are manufactured in a variety of forms and in a sophisticated pallet of colors. Once assembled as desired and heated in a kiln, the glasses soften, fuse tighter, and assume the shape of whatever surface they’re resting upon or within, such as a flat kiln shelf, curved mold, or casting mold. Kiln-glass is especially rich territory for artists because it encompasses and enormous range of working methods, from drawing and painting, to printmaking, to sculpture and more. Artists have the skills required for kiln-glass: an understanding of design, composition, and color theory, and an ability to conceive of layers of process and material application. Glass fusing is the process of joining compatible sheet glasses together in a kiln until the glass fuses at approximately 1490 degrees Fahrenheit. This process is done over multiple stages and each takes approximately twenty-four hours for each firing process. Many glass pieces are fired several times to create the shape, form, and texture. Kilns come in all shapes and sizes and the artist is limited to create work within the size of the kiln.

What makes you passionate about the medium you work with?

A minimalist approach gives my work a contemporary feel and illuminates the simple beauty. Glass is a smooth, seductive and mysterious substance yet at the same time, a very ordinary substance. It can be as common as a wine glass or it can be a treasured work of art. It's part of our world culture. Glassmaking has been estimated to have been around for over 5,000 years. The same piece of glass can appear to be invisible at one moment and opaque another through its display of reflection. Glass is a chameleon of sorts, an illusionist. Right down to the chemical structure of the glass. As a glass artist, the alchemist of the molecular structure of glass instructs the glass to behave in a certain manner. This is where the playground of an artist and science comes together.

What is something unique about you or your practice?

Reflections are transmitted through the light, as the sun moves through a piece of glass it shares a reflection on the surface of the wall or table top. These reflections are peaceful to watch move about a space. I love being able to work with light and glass in this way.
