Q&A With This Artist
A: I use clay and glaze to make my work. My clay is sourced from local clay manufacturing companies. I also purchase glaze ingredients to make my own glazes from scratch following recipes. I make most of my pottery on the wheel, although I also handbuild. I decorate my surfaces with geometric carved and stamped patterns. I fire in an electric kiln.
A: Clay is the only medium I can think of that you can work with as a powder, liquid, plastic or solid material. When I fire my work, there is a feeling of power in transforming the material from a soft, amorphous lump to a refined ceramic vessel, from a liquid suspension of powder in water to a hard, vitreous glaze. Working with clay also connects me to a long legacy of pottery making that was traditionally done by women across many different cultures.
A: The potential for creating community around clay keeps me nourished, inspired and passionate. I've just begun organizing a group of over seventy Black ceramicists and am so excited for the future of our group.
