About The Artist

Pauletta Brooks • New York, NY

Pauletta Brooks creates signature pieces that are organic and sculptural, encompassing an array of influences and techniques. The materials help to dictate the form with uncut raw minerals playing an integral role. "I want my work to be eye-catching and feel as if it was unearthed from a mysterious world of beauty and fantasy, as if these pieces had been dredged up from the sea from a mermaid’s lair."

Q&A with the Artist

Tell us how your work is made.

I work in a variety of jewelry techniques, but mostly enjoy a novel material: resin mesh. This material, available in various weights, strengths, and resiliencies, is one of several thermoplastic materials used in the medical industry. It has a thermal property that allows it to become soft and malleable when heated, then solid and flexible once cooled. It allows me to form a foundation and structure for the stones and allows me to re-purpose a man-made material in an environmentally sound way.

What makes you passionate about the medium you work with?

Born of a mineral-collecting father and an artist/painter mother, it’s no surprise that I developed into a jewelry artist that loves to work with stones and raw minerals, applying color, form and texture to create my work. I am always inspired by what Mother Nature has given us.

What is something unique about you or your practice?

The thermoplastic materials I use seem to shatter 'norms' about what is considered standard for jewelry. I like to surprise people with my unique brand.
