About The Artist

Barbara Morrison • Missoula, MT

My work is informed by myth, folklore, and dreams- I get ideas from folk and ethnic art, folk tales, animals, and people around the world. My sculptures are a mix of styles and techniques inspired by different cultures, literature, and nature. Many pieces are done using traditional fiber techniques , and using cast-off or recycled materials is important to me. While living in China and in Hungary and Vietnam, I studied local traditional crafts; I find them an interesting source for ideas.

Q&A with the Artist

Tell us how your work is made.

I use found objects, cast-offs, and recycled pieces of wood, fiber, beads, and wire, and each piece is an original assemblage - usually with a color related theme

What makes you passionate about the medium you work with?

I love working with bright colors and small details

What is something unique about you or your practice?

Many of my sculptures use unusual colors for the portrayal of faces, and often characters are shown with scenes inside them or animals or other attributes sprouting from their heads
