Meet the Artist
About This Artist
Mia Seo was born in Tong-young, South Korea, a rural city called the Napoli of Asia. She lived there until the age of 18. The city of Tong-young gave her numerous inspirations and made her wonder about big cities across the sea. Even though her hometown was beautiful, she was always dreaming of a new world. For further study, she decided to move to Seoul to begin the study on jewelry. After receiving her Metal Craft BFA from Sungshin Women’s University (SSWU) in Seoul, South Korea in 2018, she decided to go to the U.S to fill her curiosity in jewelry. She is currently an M.F.A. candidate at Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Georgia. The creative process in her art pieces began with her childhood experiences, using metal, textures, colors, and forms of nature.
Q&A With This Artist
A: The current state of plastic consumption is in overload, hence the option to keep trash in an environmentally correct way is impossible. In our fast-paced consumer environment, people can easily replace their necessities when no longer needed. As a result, more than 10 million tons of plastic are dumped into our oceans every year. Sustainable practice is no longer optional for society.
A: Throughout the studio practice, I sincerely bring my affection for the ocean and my need to protect it into my work by using materials that have relationships to various bodies of water. This reflects on my beautiful memories of childhood in Tongyeong.
