About The Artist

Malika Green • Bowie, MD
Jewelry • WHOLESALE AVAILABLE

I had a career in music education and even considered a PhD in Trinidad, until I met a master jeweler seeking an apprentice. I always loved jewelry so why not make it as a hobby? And as I repaired jewelry in that old-fashioned workshop in Port of Spain, I absorbed knowledge everything and found true joy. Like any all-or-nothing gal, I changed my life. I work silver, gold, copper, bronze, slowly with fire and hammer to create unique shapes inspired by nature of my new tropical home.

Q&A with the Artist

Tell us how your work is made.

What makes you passionate about the medium you work with?

I work with metal. I like the idea shaping something raw into an object that has movement, life, giving it a whole new purpose and aesthetic. It's the transformation. Wire becomes an ornate bangle. I also love wax when creating textures as detailed and organic as your fingerprint. You couldn’t organically get that in sheet metal. I aim for sensuality in my pieces, so you want to touch and caress them. The tactility of the making is invested in the final aesthetic of the object.

What is something unique about you or your practice?

The influence of music performance is present in my approach. In the performance art, live performances are key. With a plastic art, you make objects and wait for a piece to connect with it’s rightful owner. I still enjoy music-making and no two performances are the same. With my jewelry each piece is unique in its nuance of shape and texture, even when the aggregate is the same as other pieces. What you take home hopefully connects specifically to your taste and sensibility.
