About The Artist

Laura Hunter • Olympia, WA

Distinctive, simple, wearable shapes featuring shibori-dyed patterning are the focus of my work. I make each piece from beginning to end—integrating fabric types and dying patterns, minimizing fabric waste, and using eco-friendly dyes. I began sewing in grade school and in 1991 earned a BFA in Fiber Art from the University of Washington but am primarily self-taught in shibori, garment design and construction. Creating and selling shibori textiles has been my livelihood for 25 years.

Q&A with the Artist

Tell us how your work is made.

What makes you passionate about the medium you work with?

Creativity and constraint go hand in hand for me. I love working within the constraints shibori bestows. Through binding, folding, and dyeing, the Japanese art of shibori allows me to realize order onto cloth while leaving room for spontaneity and surprise at the outcome. Fabric invites touch: the elegance of silk crepe, the coziness of wool knit. Wearing a work creates interaction and intimacy with that piece in ways that are impossible by merely looking.

What is something unique about you or your practice?

My love of gardening, geometry, geology, mystery books, and astronomy all play an underlying role in my clothing and scarf designs. I loved geology in school, figuring out what layers came first, solving the mystery! Practicing shibori connects me abstractly to that and to nature and the universe as a whole.
