About This Artist
Harold Kalmus received his BFA in sculpture from the Philadelphia College of Art and is a classically trained as figure sculptor; he has kept an active sculpture practice concurrent with his knife making activities. As a knife maker Harold is entirely self-taught. What began as a way to supplement his sculpture income has evolved in to a near full-time profession/obsession.
Q&A With This Artist
A: I make my blades from stainless or high carbon steel. The handles are primarily wood, domestic and foreign , sourced from two trusted suppliers at the forefront of responsible and sustainable harvesting. Knives are complimented with color accents and details various plastics and non-ferrous metals
A: What pleases me most about my kitchen knives is the knowledge that they will be used and used often, thus bringing some measure of pleasure to the owners on a daily basis and for years to come.
A: I spent most of my career sitting in front of a computer, what keeps me nourished, inspired, and passionate is going out to my studio every day to create and play with real physical stuff.
