Kalmus Culinary Knives

About The Artist

Harold Kalmus • Arden, DE

I make knives for the kitchen. Knives of exceptional performance, that are a pleasure to use and a delight to look at. While adhering to the highest levels of craftsmanship and design, my knives are made to be used; an extension of your hand and an integral component of your kitchen.

Q&A with the Artist

Tell us how your work is made.

Beginning with sheets of steel and bits of wood, I design and create knives utilizing time-honored and time-tested materials and techniques while gladly accepting the assist of more modern processes and materials. Working with beautiful woods (all sustainably harvested), minimal bits of plastic for color accent and a variety of other metals for pins and other details, I engage in a mix and match design process, always looking for woods that complement each other and match the character of the blade.

What makes you passionate about the medium you work with?

I enjoy taking cold steel and rough wood and turning it into an object of both beauty and use.

What is something unique about you or your practice?

I devote as much or more time to the design and constructions of my handles than to the blades, the idea being that the hand should reach for what the eye is attracted to.
