Meet the Artist
About This Artist
For 30 years, I've had an endless fascination with newspaper. It began with an assignment in a metalsmithing class. I had to create a piece of jewelry which did not consist of any traditional materials (no metal, precious stones, etc.). I chose newspaper. I love to push the boundaries of it's text, color and content. For example, The New York Times, Wall Street Journal and USA Today have very different fonts. I love to juxtapose them to create wonderful rich textural patterns.
Q&A With This Artist
A: I use various sections of recycled newspapers including comic strips, crosswords, headlines, stock listings and expired coupons. The newspaper is cut into strips, hand-form into beads and hand-stitched into bracelets, earrings, brooches, cufflinks, and necklaces.
A: I love the process of transforming an ordinary material such as newspaper into art. I love to push the boundaries of the material as an artistic medium. The colorful, expressive faces of comic strips and the linear textural patterns of expired coupon bar codes are my favorites.
A: Challenging myself to take my artwork to the next level. Constantly pushing myself to elevate newspaper as an artistic medium.
