Meet the Artist
About This Artist
My name is Rashana and I'm excited to share my creative vision with you. I started Free Maiden in order to create handmade adornment that was both unique and timeless. Fabricated with various metals, vintage, and found objects, I draw inspiration from nature, indigenous art, and abstract form. I carry the belief that beauty is found in both traditional and modern offerings, and Free Maiden takes great pride in combining the two. Welcome to my journey.
Q&A With This Artist
A: I use silver, brass, and recycled gold. Occasionally, I use elements from vintage jewelry pieces as well. I also am excited about incorporating natural gemstones. My process is pretty organic. I start with an abstract form and start manipulating the metal from there. I used to draw out everything I wanted to do but it would never turn out that way. I realized that the metal will eventually tell me what it wants to be.
A: I absolutely love metal because it’s both malleable and fixed at the same time. You don’t have to be too delicate with it, but it also can be temperamental. I enjoy the balance you have to strike in order to make something really beautiful and lasting.
A: Other makers and hearing their stories keeps me inspired. Sometimes, it can feel like you’re on an island when you’re designing and making. Having that connection to other artists reenergizes me. I also don’t think there is anything else that feeds me the way creating does.
