About The Artist

Diana Friend • Stuart Island, WA
Wood • WHOLESALE AVAILABLE

I am teased by complex bark and intense grain. Cracks, voids and color are a further draw. These elements are the design cues I follow to create my wooden bowls. As the work spins, the joys of exploration guide my final forms. Occasionally, these delightful imperfections are preserved by carefully placed hardwood ties which add a discreet elegance. When held in ones hands, gentle curves and soft finishes are the final reward. Turned with Solar Power on a remote island in the Pacific Northwest.

Q&A with the Artist

Tell us how your work is made.

What makes you passionate about the medium you work with?

I love making bowls, platters and cups on the lathe. Each piece, with planning and design flexibility, can reveal some part of a tree’s life. Fun and challenges happen and that is exciting. Plus learning new techniques, to help an idea to succeed, is always good for one's craft. The two can end in highlighting- what is already there. Found wood provides this pleasure of discovery. Cast-offs use less resources as a medium. And I am lucky to have solar power to make less of an energy imprint.

What is something unique about you or your practice?

The body of my work is all so very different. From papery thin, tiny bowls to huge and sometimes thicker platters and bowls. I work towards elegance for what ever wood I find. And I use all kinds of wood. It is surprising to see what beauty is in the detritus we discard. Plus each piece of wood dictates something of its own. Therefore, the designs shift constantly. Then the finish I favor brings you very close to the wood.
