I make miniature paintings to wear. Equally a jewelry designer and a painter, I transform bits of wood and dabs of paint into wearable art. I'm inspired by nature, Renaissance art, and most recently, Indo-Persian miniature painting. I use tiny brushes and a magnifier to render meticulous detail in my paintings. I then assemble the pieces into jewelry designs, often incorporating semiprecious gems.

Q&A with the Artist

Tell us how your work is made.

Each piece is hand painted, using tiny brushes and a magnifier. I design the panel shapes, based on Renaissance decorative motifs, using Affinity Designer. They are then laser cut in maple panel. Before painting, each piece is sanded smooth, then some of them are gilded with 22k gold leaf. Each piece is carefully drilled and findings attached. Some pieces are embellished with semiprecious gems.

What makes you passionate about the medium you work with?

I love painting, because I can transform bits of wood and paint into something precious, whether it is a tiny landscape painting, birds, animals, or trompe l'loeil "jewels". The possibilities are endless! The process of focusing in on such a small scale is both a challenge and a meditative process.

What is something unique about you or your practice?

Over the past two years, I've been learning Persian miniature painting and illumination from an Iranian artist in the U.K. It was an art form I always admired, but never thought I'd be able to learn it. Remote learning opportunities exploded during the pandemic... one good thing that came out of all this! Doing this new style of painting has not only improved my skills, but has opened up a new style of painting for me.
