About The Artist

Celeste Wong • Springfield, OR
Mixed Media • WHOLESALE AVAILABLE • CUSTOM COMMISSIONS

I strive to create brilliant timepieces (watches), inspired by the ocean, with mixed media dials that not only tell time but also serve as an art piece for your wrist. My preferred dial materials are abalone shell and mother of pearl. An engineer by training, I've turned my eye for precision and detail in building a watch brand that specializes in innovative and bespoke timepieces that are part of how we express ourselves and show up in the world.

Q&A with the Artist

Tell us how your work is made.

We craft each dial, by hand, in our studio in Springfield, Oregon. I have the timepiece movements specially made for me in Switzerland to accommodate my thicker dials. After designing my work, I start by tinting the abalone shell and mother of pearl to my desired colors. Then cut the pieces and place each part behind a microscope. After the dial is complete, I build the watch and put it through 3 days of integrity testing to make sure it's going to keep time perfectly.

What makes you passionate about the medium you work with?

I absolutely love doing this work! The learning curve has been steep and even after doing this for 10 years, I'm still learning new things and making each watch better and of higher quality. The abalone shell, being an organic material, is a fantastic medium because you never know what you are going to get. I couldn't create two dials exactly the same even if I wanted to.

What is something unique about you or your practice?

Celeste Watch Company is one of only two women-owned and operated watch companies in the US.
