Meet the Artist
About This Artist
I am an embroidery artist concentrating on creating handcrafted wearables using traditional techniques in a contemporary context. I primarily work in goldwork hand embroidery; a medium historically used to adorn royalty and those in positions of power. In my practice, I use this technique in unconventional ways and make this historically inaccessible and grandiose artform accessible for everyday life. With my work, I hope to bring awareness to this craft in order to help maintain its longevity.
Q&A With This Artist
A: Fibers, metals and glass are the main components to my pieces. My goldwork supplies are specifically sourced from the United Kingdom. Goldwork materials are virtually impossible to find in the US so I get them from a few small businesses based in England. My process is very organic. I do a lot of sketching in various mediums to inspire and contextualize my embroidered pieces. I also love to experiment within my work, usually with different materials.
A: I was introduced to hand embroidery, and specifically the medium I primarily work in, goldwork, while studying at the Royal School of Needlework in the UK. I immediately fell in love with it. I am a naturally slow, meticulous worker, so hand embroidery just clicked.
A: The physical process of embroidering within my craft is so meditative for me. I also try to carve out at least an hour everyday to just ideate/create/ experiment without any expectations. This usually takes the form of thread drawings, charcoal drawings and paintings.
