Meet the Artist
About This Artist
Carl Johnson is an artist originally from Washington, DC. He received his BFA in Fibers in 2021 from The Savannah College of Art and Design. Weaving is mathematical, logistical, physical, creative, tedious, and requires endurance. It is a practice that dates back to the earliest creations of textiles. Weaving with metal allows Carl to embrace the ageless craft and add a unique modern twist. The combination of cotton and steel, hard and soft materials creates a visual and verbal conversation between the work and the viewer.
Q&A With This Artist
A: The process and challenge of pushing the limits of weaving and the discovery of new ideas and techniques. Aiming to be a pioneer in the world of weaving with metal.
A: Creating pieces of woven fabric that contain metal. The metal allows the fabric to hold its shape when manipulated to create sculptural forms.
A: Desmond Beach was my high school art teacher for 3 years, and is the one that pushed me to embrace the title of artist. Without him, I would not have gone to school to pursue art and therefore I would not have found weaving.
