About The Artist

Barbara Schulman • Bethlehem, PA

The focus of my life has been that of creating textile objects, which is the way I understand, escape from, comment on, and play with the complexities of life. I work with original textiles drawn from my extensive background in weaving, fabric dyeing and patterning, painting, and stitching, which I then spontaneously cut and reassemble until a transformation to the realm of memories, dreams, fantasies or fears appears. Deconstructing of former quilts into new ones is a favorite practice.

Q&A with the Artist

Tell us how your work is made.

In no particular order, this is how I work with fabric.....Dye, Paint, Cut, Sew, Stitch, Deconstruct, Reconstruct, Throw in sink and pour on bleach, Invent, and Be Surprised!

What makes you passionate about the medium you work with?

I love making and seeing the transformation from white fabric to colors when it is dyed and painted. Stitching is a joyful process because it forms new texture and unexpected shape.

What is something unique about you or your practice?

I never know what a piece will look like because I love the surprise of not planning!
