Q&A with the Artist

Tell us how your work is made.

Everything I make is hand formed and all the polymer colors I custom mix. I love to explore methods of combining polymer clay (PC) and mixed metals (SS) (primarily stainless steel). PC will burn at a temperature higher than 300 degrees. SS will not become fluid at anything less than 10,000 degrees. So the sequence of constructing an object that combines both materials requires planning. Over the last 18 years I have learned a lot about what PC is able to do, by constantly asking what if? I don’t discard ideas if the solution is not readily apparent. I explore. I view the world from different perspectives and don’t believe in “back” or “front”, all sides are equal. And I believe that all objects should “tell a story”. I am a storyteller through my welded metal and polymer creations

What makes you passionate about the medium you work with?

Polymer clay has limitless color possibilities and techniques to explore. Solids, transparent, patterned. The tig welding process I use to create my art requires intense concentration. I find joy in the process of exploring, creating and constructing.

What is something unique about you or your practice?

Most people are surprised by how lightweight my creations are. Since I use stainless steel piano wire for many of the earrings they weigh almost nothing. Another surprise is the movement in the pieces. I love kinetic art and incorporate that into my designs.
